Ripley Volleyball wins “Bulldog Bash” Silver Bracket championship in comeback fashion
NEW ALBANY–Second-year Ripley Volleyball head coach Laura Booth said one of the biggest challenges coming into the 2023 season is helping a brand new lineup of mostly young and inexperienced starters learn how to win.
Saturday, the Lady Tigers took a huge step in that process with come-from-behind victories over Starkville and Myrtle in Saturday’s Bulldog Bash to claim the “Silver Bracket” Tournament championship.
“I am so impressed with their desire and drive to find a way to win,” said Booth. “We talk a lot about making the other team beat us and not beating ourselves. They were finally able to do that this afternoon.”
The 12-team tournament began with pool play, where The Lady Tigers finished 1-2. They took a pair of sets over West Union (25-21 and 25-4) but dropped sets to Kossuth (25-18, 25-22) and defending Class 1A state champion, Ingomar (25-11, 25-14). Ripley’s record and point differential over Mytle placed them as a No. 2 seed in the Silver six-team bracket.
With a bye, Ripley advanced to the semifinals where they meet the Starkville. The Lady Jackets took the first set, 25-22 and forced Ripley into a must-win scenario. In that second set, a huge kill by freshman outside hitter Ruthie McCafferty broke a 12-12 tie and started a three-point scoring run to make it 15-12. Starkville never went away, but Ripley held on for the 25-22 win to force a third set. Ripley led the final set from start to finsh and won 15-9 to advance to the finals against Myrtle.
The championshp matchup was almost an exact replay of the semifinals. The Lady Hawks took the opening set 25-18 for a 1-0 lead. And again, Ripley dug deep to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 victory in set two. In the decisive third set, the Lady Tigers were the first team to 15, winning by five points to claim the Silver title.
Ripley finished the day with a 3-2 record overall. That record won’t count on their win/loss record for the new season, but Booth beleives the resliece her team showed in the back-to-back comebaks, could lead to some wins that do count.
“It’s a huge confidence booster. They know they can win now. I’m so proud of them,” Booth said.
